A Garden For Pottering

This garden was designed for clients who are retired. They enjoy gardening and have a good knowledge of plants, particularly perennials.  For over thirty years they have lived in this house and had made a garden from a very difficult site which was now proving to be potentially hazardous where safety was concerned. The brief was to create a new garden that would be relatively easy to look after. The clients requested no grass.

This is a garden for entertaining friends and family, looking after grand-children with areas to eat, play and read but most importantly for the clients to relax, potter and continue their passion for collecting plants. Many plants were saved from the original garden. The clients' granite setts and various paving materials were recycled around the water fountain and in other areas of the garden.

It has been lovely working for these clients who visit many gardens. To create a garden within a specific budget has been a challenge but at the same time immensely rewarding.

Dear Heather
Thank you for your plant lists and notes on care. More than that, thank you both for achieving such a wonderful transformation to our garden. It has been greatly appreciated by all who have seen it so far.

The Trampoline Garden
Indian sandstone paving was used for the seating area and silver- grey granite setts were used for the curvy path. This was our second garden design and construction for this client.

A Family Garden including an ornamental vegetable parterre

This garden was completed in the spring of 2009. There are photographs of the garden taken in the spring and summer of 2010.
This design has three distinct areas. The planting will provide the contrast essential to each area. The large lawn will be an area for play and relaxation while the surrounding planting will give a screen to the drive. There will be repeat planting of ornamental shrubs, tall and low-growing perennials and grasses all the way along the drive to give unity to the design.
Trellis screens, painted a 'willowy green' shade, are used throughout the garden.
The vegetable parterre garden has four straight paths providing a formal layout but the planting of veg and ornamental perennials will make a soft contrast. The dividing trellis screens will give a feeling of enclosure.
